Rosenqvist beats Giovinazzi to win Red Bull Ring race two

1 Mins read

Felix Rosenqvist made amends for his race one failure to convert pole position into a victory by leading from start to finish during Saturday’s second race at the Red Bull Ring.

The Prema Powerteam driver was able to control the race from the front right from lights out, and took his seventh win of 2015 despite pressure from behind from Antonio Giovinazzi and the late introduction of the safety car following a spin into the gravel trap by Ryan Tveter.

Rosenqvist appeared to get the jump on Jagonya Ayam with Carlin’s Giovinazzi at the start, pulling away to an almost two second lead while the Italian battled hard with Lance Stroll, but once Giovinazzi had consolidated second, he closed down the gap to Rosenqvist and battled hard for the win, though coming up 1.312s short.

Stroll comfortably held on for third for his maiden series podium finish to make it two Prema Powerteam drivers on the podium, with the ever-improving Canadian Ferrari Driver Academy driver holding off the challenge of Van Amersfoort Racing’s Charles Leclerc until the chequered flag.

Alexander Albon took fifth for Signature but only just, as he was forced to hang on by just 0.039s as Motopark’s Markus Pommer made a move exiting the final corner on the final lap. Pommer had earlier overtaken George Russell of Carlin, who was forced to settle as a result in seventh, just ahead of his fellow Briton Jake Dennis of Prema Powerteam in eighth.

Mikkel Jensen took ninth for Mücke Motorsport, while Gustavo Menezes completed the top ten for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin having passed Callum Ilott of Carlin earlier in the race to move into the points-paying positions. Ilott eventually finished twelfth behind Team West-Tec F3’s Raoul Hyman.

Second row starter Sergio Sette Camara blew his opportunity for a good result by jumping the start in his Motopark machine, earning himself a drive-through penalty that ultimately saw him end the race down in nineteenth position, two places ahead of Tatiana Calderon who was tagged into a spin at the opening corner of the second lap by Van Amersfoort Racing’s Arjun Maini.
