Brits lead the way in Portimao practice

Callum Ilott and Jake Dennis each topped a session as the Portimao weekend of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship got underway on Friday morning with two forty-minute practice sessions.

Red Bull-backed Carlin driver Ilott was quickest in the first session before Racing Steps Foundation-backed Dennis led the way in the second session for Prema Powerteam.

Ilott set a time of 1m42.122s in session one, 0.057s faster than Motopark’s Sergio Sette Camara, while series returnee Nick Cassidy ended third for Prema Powerteam.

Motopark’s Markus Pommer was fourth ahead of Gustavo Menezes of Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, while Dennis was sixth ahead of his team-mate Felix Rosenqvist and Alexander Albon of Signature.

British drivers George Russell and Sam MacLeod completed the top ten for Carlin and Motopark respectively.

Dennis set the pace in session two with a time of 1m42.101s, with Rosenqvist this time second ahead of current championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi of Jagonya Ayam with Carlin third.

Pommer was again fourth ahead of Prema Powerteam’s Lance Stroll, with MacLeod in sixth ahead of Mücke Motorsport’s Maximilian Günther, while Albon, Ilott and Sette Camara completed the top ten.
