Russell and Lorandi share Pau pole positions

1 Mins read

George Russell and Alessio Lorandi will share the pole positions for races two and three around the streets of Pau after leading the way in second qualifying.

Both drivers took their maiden FIA European Formula 3 Championship poles during the session, and for Lorandi in particular, it offers an excellent change for the Italian to take the honours of the final race of the weekend that is titled as the Pau Grand Prix.

The weather conditions played favourably on those in Group A, that ran second to those in Group B, with the track drying enough for Russell to secure race two pole position for Hitech GP, while Lorandi’s second fastest time was enough for the Carlin driver to secure pole for the final race of the weekend.

Joining Russell on the front row for race two will be fellow Briton Callum Ilott, who’s best time of 1m21.708s was enough for the Van Amersfoort Racing driver to top Group B.

Sergio Sette Camara will start third in race two in the Red Bull-liveried Motopark entry, while the Brazilian will be joined on row two by race one pole sitter Lance Stroll of Prema Powerteam.

Lorandi will start fifth for race two alongside another Prema Powerteam driver Nick Cassidy, while a third, Ralf Aron, starts seventh alongside Mikkel Jensen of Mücke Motorsport.

Ben Barnicoat will start ninth for Hitech GP, with the top ten for race two rounded out by Van Amersfoort Racing’s Anthoine Hubert.

Lorandi will start the Pau Grand Prix finale from pole position alongside Stroll, with Sette Camara and Cassidy on row two, while Russell and Ilott will share the third row.

Barnicoat will start from seventh ahead of Jensen, while Ryan Tveter of Carlin will start ninth ahead of Hubert.

Championship leader Maximilian Günther had a disastrous session, with the German crashing and causing a red flag early, meaning he will start the two races down in nineteenth and twenty-first respectively, while Guanyu Zhou and Pedro Piquet also crashed, and will start towards the rear of the field as well.
