Monteiro tests for Mahindra as they release images of season three challenger

1 Mins read

Portuguese driver Tiago Monteiro has carried out a test for Mahindra Racing at the Circuit de Calafat in Spain.

The 39 year-old is currently sitting second in the WTCC, but the test shows that he could be willing to combine his efforts in touring cars with a full-time race seat in Formula E.

If he chooses to do so he would be joining the WTCC leader Jose Maria Lopez in the all-electric racing series, after it was announced that he would replace Jean-Eric Vergne at DS Virgin Racing for the 2016/17 season.

Mahindra Racing had Nick Heidfeld and Bruno Senna as their driver line-up for the 2015/16 season of Formula E. Although Heidfeld has stated that he expects to re-sign with Mahindra for season three, there have been rumours linking Senna with a drive for the new Jaguar outfit that is entering the series this year.

If he does join them that would leave a space open for former Formula 1 racer Monteiro to fill. Since leaving F1 towards the end of the 2006 season the Portuguese has raced in the WTCC, firstly with SEAT Sport and more recently with Honda Racing.

Although a fifth placed finish in the 2014 championship is still his best result to date, this season has been far more positive, and has included two race wins including last time out in his home race at Vila Real.

Mahindra meanwhile have also released photos of their season three Formula E challenger, the Mahindra M3 Electro.

The new chassis features an upper plate on the front wing that is joined to the main nose section, which will be a feature on all cars next season.

The images were released by Team Principal Dilbagh Gill on his twitter account, and suggested that they will shortly be announcing a new sponsor whose logo will feature on the new front section of the car.
