Alexander Sims will use the Snetterton round of the F3 Cup to qualify to race in the Macau Grand Prix in November.
The British racer will line-up with Double R Racing at the Snetterton event on 8-9 October, the same team he is set to race for at Macau, with whom he finished third with in 2015.
Macau rules insist that a driver can only race in the Formula 3 event should they have competed in a recognised F3 class at some point during the season, and having seen a ride with Double R Racing fall through for the season finale of the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship last weekend, it leaves the F3 Cup as his last option.
“The plan is to do F3 Cup and have some fun, and in doing so make myself eligible for Macau,” said Sims on Autosport. “I like going back to single-seaters every now and then as it’s a different challenge and Macau is just such a special race.
“I’ve gotten better every year, and was fourth twice and then third overall last year, so I can at least claim a podium finish there on my CV. I’d love to get the win there as it’s one of the top prizes in world motorsport. But the level of competition is very tough.”
GT ace Sims is expected to join a two-car Double R Racing assault on Macau alongside Dan Ticktum.
