Ekström: “I had a huge chance to win”

In the opening race of the weekend, Mattias Ekström came home in what could be seen as a disappointing fifth place after starting from third on the grid.

It looked as though Audi were going to dominate the race after claiming a 1-2-3-4-5 start on the grid but the same level of performance was not seen in the race.

The second race was much better for the Swede, after starting from third once again.

A pitstop early on, a strategy Ekström has attempted a number of times this season placed him as the lead car once everyone else had stopped.

“With my early stop, I had a huge chance to win. However, I had to battle with blunt weapons towards the end. René Rast waited for his chance and then simply went past. This is anything but perfect, but the result is okay.”

Rast, having started from pole position pitted later than his stablemate meaning Ekström was unable to keep him behind with his much older tyres.

Prior to the race Audi stated that when there are clashes between FIA World RX and the DTM Series – both of which Ekström competes in – they want the Swede to prioritise the DTM.

With the next DTM round at the Norisring clashing with the Höljes round of the WRX, Ekström is set to miss his home race in the WRX to focus on his DTM title challenge.

It would have been a difficult decision for him to make as he is in title contention in both championships.
