Rene Rast headed the second DTM Series practice session at the Moscow Raceway, ahead of Mattias Ekström and Nico Muller.
Championship leader Ekstrom had led for much of the session but was pipped by Rast, the Swede then returned to the top of the timings with fifteen minutes remaining only to be beaten by the German once again with two minutes remaining of the session.
Timo Glock was the lead BMW, and best placed non-Audi, with Loic Duval completing the top five.
Yesterday’s pacesetter Jamie Green was sixth fastest, followed by Gary Paffett as the lead Mercedes driver.
Lucas Auer, Augusto Farfus and Marco Wittmann completed the top ten.
The injured Mike Rockenfeller was the only Audi not to have placed in the top ten with twelfth place at the end of the session.
Pacesetter Rast following the session, said: “Very good feeling. Obviously I learnt a lot from yesterday because I did not know the track. Still, we can improve the car in some areas but generally very happy.”
Qualifying for the first race of the weekend gets underway at 12.40 local time and will last for twenty minutes.
Last year, Paffett claimed pole in the first qualifying session before going on to finish third in the race and on the Sunday Wittmann claimed pole and converted it into a win.
