Sam Bird says that he is ‘in shock’ after coming away victorious in both rounds of the New York ePrix.

The DS Virgin Racing driver showed stunning pace in both races to comfortably cross the line first, winning the second by over eleven seconds from his nearest challengers.

His form was in stark contrast to what the team had achieved before the New York race, with their best result before then being a second place finish in Marrakesh all the way back in November.

But their car seemed the most suited to the layout of the New York track, and speaking afterwards Bird thanked his team for giving him such a competitive car.

Bird said, “I’m still in shock! What a weekend it’s been and what a car the DS Virgin Racing guys have given me.

“Being a longer race I thought it would be hard on energy but we managed it so well. The pitstop was a key point but we timed it well to just get out in front.

“I’m just delighted for everyone in the team, especially by engineers and mechanics, who have worked so hard for this.”

The result catapulted Bird up the driver’s standings into fourth place, and pushed the DS Virgin team into a comfortable fourth place in the team’s standings and within touching distance of Mahindra Racing in third.

Team Principal Alex Tai thanked Bird and stand-in driver Alex Lynn after the race, who between them secured pole position and victory in both races.

“It’s been an absolutely fantastic weekend for the team and all our partners,” Tai said.

“To be the first team to win in New York is incredible but to do it again is unthinkable!

“Sam and Alex both did an incredible job, as did all the mechanics and engineers, and showed the true potential of the car.”
