Mattias Ekström heads into the next DTM Series round as championship leader after another strong weekend for the Swede.

There was doubt as to whether Ekström would be on the grid due to the FIA WorldRX taking place at his home race in Höljes.

Starting from sixth place on Saturday, Ekström got an excellent start from the third row of the grid to be in second place by Turn 1.

Maxime Martin managed to get ahead of Ekström, due to the Belgian having better pace in the damp conditions. the

With six laps remaining he attempted to get back ahead, but was not able to make the corner without understeering therefore handing the position back to Martin.

“In rain, Maxime was faster, so I let him pass,”said Ekström. “Then, on a dry track, I really fought hard, approached him again and even got past him once. Unfortunately, my pace in turn one was a little too fast, so he took second place again. But I have no reason to complain: I’ve clinched a podium, many points and the championship lead.”

The Audi driver was the only non-BMW in the top six.

Ekström looked to have been on the way to a third place finish in Sunday’s race as well, after getting past Marco Wittmann, but contact between the pair allowed Edoardo Mortara to claim the final spot on the rostrum by 0.002 seconds over Ekström.
