Daniel Ticktum set the pace in both free practice sessions on Friday morning as the Silverstone round of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship got underway, with the Motopark driver edging out Carlin’s Sacha Fenestraz in both.

Ticktum comes into the weekend just one point behind Marcus Armstrong in the Drivers’ Championship, with Silverstone marking the first round of the second half of the ten-round season.

The Red Bull Junior’s time of 1:51.286 was more than four-tenths of a second clear of the Renault Sport Academy member in the first session, while his best time of 1:50.753 in the second was again well clear of Fenestraz, this time by 0.366 seconds.

Jüri Vups was third fastest in the first session just ahead of Motopark team-mate Jonathan Aberdein, while Mick Schumacher, the most recent winner in the series in race three at Spa-Francorchamps, was the leading of the Prema Theodore Racing drivers in fifth.

Alex Palou led the Hitech Bullfrog GP charge in sixth ahead of Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala, while Robert Shwartzman and Armstrong put their Prema machines eighth and tenth respectively, either side of Motopark’s Fabio Scherer.

Aberdein was third fastest in the second of the two sessions ahead of Shwartzman, Armstrong and Schumacher, while Marino Sato was seventh ahead of Motopark team-mate Vips, Prema’s Guan Yu Zhou and Hitech’s Enaam Ahmed, the second of three British drivers racing in front of their home fans this weekend alongside Ticktum and Ben Hingeley.

Series debutant Charles Leong finished twenty-first quickest in the opening session for Hitech Bullfrog GP, 1.906 seconds off the pace, although the Macanese driver brought up the rear of the twenty-four car field in the second session, which is missing ma-con and Julian Hanses from the grid this weekend.

The two Qualifying sessions take place later on Friday afternoon, with the first two races of the weekend taking place on Saturday before the final race on Sunday morning ahead of the FIA World Endurance Championship’s 6 Hours of Silverstone.
