After their FIA World Endurance Championship Prologue crash, Team Project 1 have loaned a chassis from GR Racing for this weekend’s 1,000 Miles of Sebring.
During the second day of running in the WEC Prologue, the #56 Porsche brought out the only red flag of the event after Brendan Iribe came into contact with an LMP2 car and hit the wall at Turn 1. The car was recovered and Iribe reported fine, but the damage to the #56 was extensive. With the WEC race commencing on Wednesday, three days after the incident occurred, it was deemed unfixable ahead of the race.
Faced with the prospect of having to withdraw one of their cars from the opening round, Team Project 1 put in a request to GR Racing to ask for a loan of their 911 RSR chassis. GR Racing will not take part in the opening round of the season as team owner Michael Wainwright withdrew the team to focus on the safety of his employees and contractors based in Ukraine and Russia. However, as the decision was only made a couple of weeks ago to withdraw, the freight with the GR Racing car onboard had already departed, meaning the GR Racing Porsche was at the Sebring International Raceway and available to be used.
“Michael Wainwright was very kind. We were requesting but it’s a family with Porsche, so we help each other as much as we can,” Team Project 1 team principal Axel Funke told Sportscar365. “This is where we got the car and everyone was really happy to be able to start the first race of the year.”
Thanks to the loan of the GR Racing chassis, Team Project 1 were able to enter both of their cars into this weekend’s race.
The 1,000 Miles of Sebring gets underway on the 18th March, 16:00 GMT.
