The venue for this weekend’s Grand Prix may only be four years old, but in that short time, it has already produced some memorable moments.
Ahead of the race at the Yeongam International Circuit this Sunday, theCheckeredFlag.co.uk takes a look back on the top five moments of the Korean Grand Prix.
5. Hamilton’s AstroTurf drama – 2012
In a race that will probably not be remembered as a classic, the sight of Lewis Hamilton’s car dragging a piece of AstroTurf run off was one of the abiding memories of last year’s race. The AstoTurf “carpet” that was on the exit of most corners had been coming up all race, but it was just the McLaren driver’s luck that he was the one to suffer the most. With only a few laps left to run of what had been a difficult race, Hamilton ran slightly wide, allowing a piece to become stuck between the sidepod of his car.
The new feature didn’t help Hamilton’s cause, and he struggled with an ill-handling car to a tenth place finish. After a retirement while leading in Singapore, and a difficult race in Japan, this really was the final nail in the coffin of the British driver’s title aspirations last season.
